Pachelbel's Canon
Catalog PWC 37, T. 337, PC 358 - Pachelbel's Canon is the name generally used for a melody by the German Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel (1653 - 1706) for his Canon (melody that is imitated at a specified time interval by one or more parts) and Gigue (lively dance) for three violins, and basso continuo. It is the composer's most well known piece, as well as one of the world's most well known melodies. Paired with a gigue, it was originally scored for three violins and a basso continuo (continuous bass). With both of the movements being written in the key of D major.
Like many other Pachelbel works, the Canon remained forgotten for centuries only to be re-discovered in the 20th century. The piece has become popular, now being used for weddings and other social and celebratorial events. Since it's first official publication in 1919 it has subsequently become a familiar wedding march. The melody's chord progression has been sampled and adapted or transcribed for advertising and television promotions as well as being used in numerous commercial hits by artists like the Pet Shop Boys, Coolio and Green Day to name a few.
